At L.J. Walters we believe it's important to be informed of some of the measures that are available that when applied will further protect your investments . We've included some information to get you started but are also available should you have any further questions. Together we're able to minimize your risk and increase your peace of mind.

PREVENTING AUTO THEFT

The best way to prevent the theft of your vehicle is to never leave it running with the keys in the ignition. Especially in the winter months we have a habit of letting our vehicles warm up. It only takes a second for someone to steal your vehicle.

Park your vehicle in a well lit area and keep your doors locked at all times.

PREVENTING HOME THEFT

The best way to protect yourself from a home invasion is to have an alarm system installed in your home. Did you know that you can save up to 10 % on your homeowners insurance by having an alarm.

Deadbolt locks are also a great way to protect your home. The harder you make it for an intruder to get into your home the less likely they will target you. Make sure all your doors and windows are locked properly when you are not home.

Have a neighbour or a relative park a vehicle in the driveway, pickup your mail and remove the snow from walkways and driveway when away for extended periods of time.

PREVENTING HOME DAMAGE

When leaving your home on vacation in the winter months, make sure someone you trust is checking your home regularly. Make sure the heating system is working properly and not turned off while away to protect against pipe freezing and bursting. Shutting off the indoor water supply, unless it is supporting a necessary function will prevent any potential damage should a burst or valve leak occur.

BUSINESS CRIME PREVENTION

As a business owner you should ensure that there are checks and balances in place with the handling of cash.

An external audit should be completed by a qualified professional at least once a year on your businesses books.

Bank accounts should be reconciled regularly. As well bank deposits should be done on a regular basis but the time of day should be altered to prevent patterns. Always make sure that company cheques are locked away.

Serial numbers of all computers and equipment should be stored in a secure place. Have important files backed up and stored off site, and have an emergency contact list prepared.

Make sure that key employees have a back up person in case the key employee is ill.

Make sure all exterior doors have deadbolt locks in place and that windows are all secure. An alarm system is the best way to protect yourself in the case of intrusion or fire.

If removing snow yourself in the winter months you should keep a log book on when the snow and ice were cleared.

SERVICING YOUR CLIENTS IN THE EVENT OF A LOSS

Always have a plan of action in place in the event that you suffer a loss on the premises so that your business can continue operating as best as possible.
